Wedding FAQ

Your wedding tailoring questions answered

Do I need to wear a suit to a wedding?

Whether or not you need to wear a suit to a wedding depends on the formality of the event as dictated by the dress code, which is usually listed on the invitation. Any call for 'cocktail' or 'lounge suit' means you should wear a suit. A 'garden', 'casual' or 'beach' wedding means chinos or tailored trousers are acceptable, though you should still wear a collared shirt and blazer. Calls for 'black tie' should be met by a tuxedo and 'dinner suit' should be met with a formal dinner suit or tuxedo. If you're unsure of the dress code, a two-button wool suit in navy or grey is your safest bet, crossing over a wide range of dress codes and wedding styles.

How do I choose a wedding suit?

When it comes to choosing a suit for your wedding, there are many options and styles, from a formal tuxedo to a classic two-button navy wool suit, as well as many more playful and fun options. When trying to establish which is right for you, you should first confirm the style and formality of your wedding - this will inform the type of suit you should be looking at. For a formal wedding, you should look at a tuxedo or dinner suit. For a casual wedding, something you might host in a garden, a farm or a beach, you may choose to wear chinos with a less structured blazer in cotton or linen. Or, for weddings halfway between the two, such as a cocktail-style, a classic two-button suit in wool, often in navy or grey is perfect. Discuss with your parnter what style of wedding you are planning on hosting, and then speak to one of our expert Stylists for some guidance if you need some direction.

What colour wedding suit should I choose?

The colour of suit you should wear to a wedding depends on the formality and wedding venue. The most formal weddings, those events requiring black tie, or a tuxedo or dinner jacket, most commonly require black, midnight blue or cream jackets and pants. However the demand here is more in the construction of the suit than the colour—details like satin lapels, a bow tie and a stripe down the leg are reserved only for this dress code. For events with a dress code requesting a lounge suit, cocktail suit, or just 'suit and tie', a wool suit in navy or grey is ideal. For more casual weddings, those with a dress code listing garden, casual or beach, the options are much wider. While navy and grey are still perfectly acceptable, don't be afraid to have some fun with colour; anything from cream to shades of maroon and olive are perfect! Overall, remember that while dressing up and well is a form of good manners, overtly loud and ostentatious suits at a wedding can take attention away from the Bride and Groom.
